A nossa Natureza 36Planet Earth
Planet Earth, also known as the Blue Planet, is the only habitable planet in the Solar System, as it has very peculiar characteristics compared to the other planets. One of the main reasons for the existence of life is the Earth's position in relation to the Sun and the existence of water in all three states (liquid, solid and gaseous).
We already know a lot about Planet Earth, but there's still so much to discover!
Some interesting facts about our planet:
- Since 1906, the average global temperature of planet Earth has increased by between 0.6 and 0.9 degrees Celsius;
- Many species have been affected by rising temperatures. For example, the Adélie penguins in Antarctica have decreased from 32,000 breeding pairs to 11,000 in just 30 years;
- Every day, between 100 and 300 tonnes of cosmic dust enter our planet's atmosphere;
- In approximately 5 billion years, the Sun will consume all its fuel, undergo an expansion and consume Mercury, Venus and possibly the Earth in the process;
- There is a reservoir of water deep in the Earth's crust that contains a volume three times greater than that of all the Earth's oceans;
- An earthquake is recorded on our planet every two minutes;
- The Earth's rotation is slowing down and it is predicted that in 140 million years the days will be 25 hours instead of 24;
- The Earth's core is as hot as the surface of the Sun. The temperature of the Earth's core, which is approximately 1,207 kilometres thick, is close to that of the Sun's surface, with temperatures close to 6,000 degrees Celsius.
